With their naturally complementary color, white kitchen islands can take on a variety of personas: cool and sleek in a modern kitchen (especially when paired with a dramatic black stone countertop), or warm and inviting on a traditional wood island topped with a chopping block.

While white offers a nice visual counterpart to a variety of colors, white-on-white islands—where both the base and countertop are the same material and/or color—offer a nice low-contrast option for a calm, quieting feel in the kitchen.

White countertops often get a reputation for being high-maintenance. Stark-white surfaces are known for showing every crumb or being more prone to show a stain. That's not necessarily the case, though.

Keep in mind that the look of your countertop depends largely on the type of surface you use, from stone and stone-look countertops to solid wood options.
